welcome to sidereal rp
![[community profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/community.png)

premise
Your characters find themselves in a long-abandoned city built up around an oasis in the middle of a vast desert—impassable and impossible to leave, due to an endlessly raging sandstorm and a strange sense of disorientation that always turns you back around into the city. At night, the sky is clear and vast, with two enormous moons and endless, glittering, unfamiliar stars.
Sidereal, aka The City of the Fixed Stars, is a beautiful, solarpunk setting: lush with water and plant life, full of mysterious technology... and strangely empty, overgrown and long-abandoned. Characters can begin to reclaim the city: make a home for themselves, reopen an old café or store, discover how to get electricity running again, uncover art and instruments, learn about the legends of strange dead gods, tune out the constant unearthly wailing from a bottomless mine shaft, puzzle out the secrets of societal collapse, ignore the howling on the nights with no stars... fun things like that.
Life in the city is pleasant, with good weather and enough food, amenities, and room to discover and explore. Your characters are encouraged to make a home for themselves.
It’s just, you know. A bit strange around here sometimes.

mechanics
This is a brief overview of the game mechanics so you can stop reading here if this isn't your jam. The points below will be elaborated on elsewhere, particularly on the Gameplay page.
Time & Speed
Approximately 3:1 OOC:IC days, sometimes a little slower.
Tone
A CR-focused game where you can play at your own pace (no events or set times you need to be around or Miss Things), but where there are regular world changes to engage with and settings to explore within your threads. It's roughly conceptualized at 90% comfy make-your-own-fun slice of life, 9% strange environment, 1% soft eldritch-apocalyptic horrorshow.
Apps
Most types of characters (including OCs, CRAU, etc) are permitted. Apping is basically as easy as I could figure out how to make it.
Activity Check
Nah. If someone’s sitting on a character that’s not being played and you want to app them, please ask them, or email the mods. We put up an "are you still here?" check-in every couple months on Plurk to keep things clean.
HMD
None. If you have feedback for a castmate or another player, please chat it out with them directly.
NPCs & Mod-Run Events
None. The mods will make setting-driven posts that will give you some options for things to explore, but it's up to the players to have their characters do things. You won't have mods replying in-thread to say "oh you found x" in an exploration fashion—but you'll have posts that say "if your characters go around x, here's what you can have them do or find..." Mostly this is a sandbox with some flavortext, so it's very make-your-own-fun.
Player-Driven World Changes
Go ahead and suggest changes to the world, add or build things, etc. Changes are logged using the Housekeeping & Worldbuilding page. If you're not sure about something, just ask the mods.
Objectives & Status Effects
Yes, there is an IC system for causing things to 'randomly' affect characters (like changing age, forced truth, etc). If there's an effect you wanna do, just ping the mods.
Powercap
Common sense powercap. No ‘game breaking’ powers, and godly beings are slightly nerfed. Otherwise, just play nice.
Murder/Death
Minimal/none. Voluntary PVP is allowed and you can sustain injuries from doing dangerous stuff, but the worldbuilding supports no permadeath. It’s OK if you want to app a villainous or disagreeable character, but please keep in mind that this is primarily a get-along game.
Locked Comm
The community is locked, so only members can view posts. If you're thinking about apping and/or want to be able to read the posts but aren't a current player, you can request to be added here.
NSFW/18+
All players must be 18 years of age or older. NSFW material is totally OK, but please move it off-comm to journals.

apps & drops
There are just a few easy steps to app and play at Sidereal! However, please remember that this is a closed/invite-only game, which basically just means you should know the mods or are joining at the request of an existing player.
If you don't know us well or don't think I'll recognize you when you apply, please email us before applying to give me a heads up (how you found the game, who you plan to app, and who you know that's currently playing).

1. Ensure that you've read through all the rules, setting info, etc, in
fixedstars.
2. Create your character journal and post your Info & Permissions post (see below).
3. Click here to fill out a very short form.
4. Your submission will be automatically added to the taken spreadsheet.
5. Join the community.
6. Join the Discord channel (optional)
Shortly after we receive your request to join the comm, a mod will double-check to make sure you're properly added to the taken list and that your I&P post looks OK. Once your journal is approved for the comm, you're considered accepted and good to go.

Rather than "apps," strictly speaking, players are just required to fill out a mandatory info & permissions post that should be the top post in their character journal (or otherwise easy to find).
You're welcome to use a different template adjust how you want it to look if you don't like how our suggested one looks, but please make sure you've got the same basic info. If you want to see how it looks finished, click here. ♥

There isn't really any need for an official hiatus from the game since there's no real time demands. You can easily handwave it with "yeah they've just been around doing their normal thing." Since time is a bit weird in Sidereal, you can even say that a character has literally gone out of sync with time for a little while, so they think it's been a day since people last saw them, when it's really been a couple weeks. Weird!
Dropping (IC)
At this time, characters can't voluntarily choose to leave Sidereal, i.e.: there's no "well, leaving now, it's been nice!" drop option. We may add an option like this later-later, but there isn't one right now.
You have the option to use the going out of sync option for temporary drops, or if you're, for example, playing an AU or an OC that nobody else is going to app and this is the best option for your CR. Current characters just suddenly stop seeing that character around—but it doesn't feel like they're gone. Didn't we just see them the other day . . .? Weird. If the dropped character is reapped or comes off hiatus later, as far as they can tell, it's only been a couple days, and it might be weird to learn it's been weeks or months.
Drops can also slip out of the timeline. Just like you just 'appeared' in Sidereal in the first place, suddenly you're gone. Your CR believe that you went home (or to a world of your choosing). They believe this fully and completely and with understanding, and depending on what satisfies them, they might even 'remember' getting a note about it (that they can't find but they're sure they put in a safe place). However, if that character reapps, they do not remember having been home and do not remember time passing. Whatever happened to them in their absence is a huge blank. People are allowed to doubt that anyone actually goes home—but when it's their CR, they believe it nonetheless. (If it's someone else's CR, doubt all you want!)
If you have another drop option in mind that works better for you and want to know if it's viable, hit up the mods and we'll work with you!
Dropping (OOC)
If you kept your original app submission confirmation email, you have the ability to just edit your entry in the Taken list. Swap the link to your info page with the word DROPPED. The mods will delete/move the entry during the next housekeeping jam.
If you lost the email, you can leave a comment in the Housekeeping & Worldbuilding post and we'll remove you.
Reapping
Since there isn't really a complex application process, reapps are the same as regular applications, except you don't need to wait to be re-added to the comm since you're probably already there.

Can I app an OC/duplicate character/AU/carry over CR from another game/etc?
Hell yeah, it's all good. Please just talk to players if you're apping into an existing cast and doing something unusual. Duplicate characters should be noticeably different in some way from each other (i.e.: AUs of some kind). Again, talk to that player to make sure they're on board before you app a duplicate.
How many characters can I app at once? Can I app two or three characters at the same time?
You can app multiple characters as long as you're going to play them. As long as people are chill about it, there won't be a rule about it. There’s no cap on the number of characters you can play, but please try to play the ones you do and drop the ones you don’t.
How do I canon update?
If you need to canon update, you can honestly just spontaneously ave them remember memories/change into themselves from later in their canon, etc, as though their two sets of memories occurred simultaneously. There's no need to request permission or re-submit anything.
Do we have to wait to app from new canons? If so, how long?
Please try to wait two weeks (or so) after a new canon is released before apping. After that, if it's still a super new canon, please be very judicious with spoiler warnings in threads and consider allowing people a place to easily opt-out of threading with you. If you're worried about someone else apping the character you want to app, you can drop the mods an email and we can reserve the character for you (see below for info on duplicates). The same general policy applies for characters from (for example) untranslated canons—just be aware and conscientious!
What happens if two people want to app the exact same character?
Apps are first-come, first-served. We allow duplicates, so if somebody is already playing the exact character you want to play, you may need to talk to them and work out that one of you plays an AU of some kind (see 'duplicates' above).
My character is a giant dragon. Is the city accessible for dragons/large animals/large robots?
Sure, it's a big place. You can read more about this in the Gameplay FAQ, but assume that the world adjusts your character's size temporarily if you want them to be able to shrink and access someplace. If your character is like PLANET-SIZED then maybe make them, like, elephant-sized, or something, so it's not super silly.
My character is dead in canon, are they alive here?
Heck yes.
If you don't know us well or don't think I'll recognize you when you apply, please email us before applying to give me a heads up (how you found the game, who you plan to app, and who you know that's currently playing).

Heck yes.

arrival
Characters arrive in Sidereal quite suddenly, as though the world around them has just shifted. They blink, and they're suddenly here. There may be a little bit of nausea and disorientation—probably more of it, the more sensitive you are to magic, time, and the flow of the universe, you know? They appear in the Courtyard, near the Fountain.
They are, somehow, intrinsically aware of a few things: one, that time here does not flow quite the same as where they came from, so time spent here does not mean that time is passing in their world. And two: that, at least right now, they cannot leave. If they try to fight too hard against the idea of staying, it just seems . . . difficult. Surely they'll be able to leave one day, but why make a fuss about it? It seems nice here. Wherever here is.

housing
Characters currently have the following options for housing:
• Simple, one- or two-bedroom 'condos' that look out into the Courtyard. These are tidy and lightly-stocked, ready to live in. They are accessed by a fingerprint-scanner on the door; once you access a condo for the first time, it becomes registered to you.
• Slightly larger homes located a short walk away from the Courtyard, overlooking a narrow canal. Some work is required to make these liveable—clearing out vines, relocating bees, some small repairs.
Characters are not locked in to the first housing that they select—as things develop, they can move around (or, stay in one place while they're working on and renovating another). It's totally up to you.

posting & playing
World Posts
The mods will usually post once or twice a week, usually on Tuesday & Friday. With each new World Post, the IC time will typically advance by 1 day, or move from morning to evening, etc. These are all 'mingle' posts in the sense that they will not be run by the mods, but are designed to give you hooks and things to play with with each other.
Player Posts
You can make new posts at any time, and we strongly encourage you to do so! We anticipate that since there will be regular World Posts, there may be fewer player posts than in most other games, but seriously, post as much as you want. Feel free to advance time and do your own thing. If you want to make a status effect post or something and aren't sure what's viable with the setting, just ping the mods.
Tagging
Tag posts you jump with your character's name. If playing a duplicate or a previously-played character, modify your tag. There are no other tags used.

setting & exploration
Cores
Throughout the city, there are large crystals called Cores. There are ways to re-activate these Cores, causing them to glow brightly and pulse with power and energy. They seem to have a strange magnetic field that causes anomalies (see: status effects) at times, and do other things like power the world's electricity.
Exploration
The game will start off with a set of available locations (outlined in Setting). Outside of that, if the characters try to explore further, they get disoriented and turned around (like Legend of Zelda Lost Woods style—you try to exit, and are suddenly either facing back the other way, or even worse, just randomly trotting into the Courtyard, no matter how far away you were before).
Each World Post will layer more and more onto the setting. Characters can explore and discover new areas as outlined in the World Post. For example: The World Post may say, "Today you find that if you walk North, the previously blocked path through the trees no longer disorients you. It's blocked with fallen trees, so characters will have to spend at least a day making their way through there. Once they make it, they'll find a Fountain." It's a bit spoilers from the OOC standpoint, but lets your characters ICly have the joy of their actions causing discovery.
Characters can also Do Things Independently with the world that has already been unlocked—for example, if a bunch of characters decide to clean up and repair a run-down section of the city, or start a restaurant, or fix up a boat and leave it at the canal, you can then comment to Housekeeping & Worldbuilding and that will become a permanent part of the setting.
If there's anything you want to find, create, or do, and aren't sure if you can, please just ask in the H&W post.
World Mysteries
Sometimes there are sounds. Sometimes there are dreams. Sometimes the stars go out. But you don't know about any of that, yet. So don't even worry about it.

world info
Powercap
Powers are capped to a reasonable level—nothing that can 'break' the game, blow up the whole city, or make things too easy from an OOC standpoint. If you're not sure where to draw the line, ask us! But there should be some struggle involved.
Destruction of Property
You can use powers to clear things out like, you know, demolishing a wall, or a piece of furniture, or a lamppost. Anything 'essential' (or anything that would get its own bullet point on the settings page) can't be majorly damaged—it's like, you try, and your powers or abilities sort of fizzle out and leave it only minorly scorched.
Death/Injury
Death is not permanent: characters can get hurt and die, absolutely. The Fountain in the Courtyard is a healing spring that will resurrect people or heal any injuries sustained in Sidereal (though it doesn't retroactively fix anything that happened before you arrived). If nobody is able to bring you to the Fountain and you die elsewhere, eventually you'll just wake up in the Courtyard again, maybe just a little more disoriented than usual.
Food & Amenities
There are Storerooms accessible quite near the Courtyard that have enough food, water, and basic clothes and supplies that you don't need to worry about money, or even foraging. Still, it's basic stuff, so people will definitely benefit from creating shops or bartering, crafting, discovering, and maybe setting up a market in the long-term. (More info about what exact stuff you can find in the Storerooms will be included in Settings).
Special Dietary Needs
The Storerooms supply. The weirder your needs, the weirder the supply, though—if you feed off human blood or Pure Energy, you might just find a bunch of individually wrapped protein cakes that are just labelled Pure Energy? It's weird, but you won't die.
Items & Belongings
Characters arrive with the clothes on their back, and some basic weapons and items they'd usually be carrying with them. They can mysteriously find a couple keepsakes or things they might Like To Have with them on their person as well.
Technology / Electronics
You can have things like computers, phones, etc, as your personal items, but they behave slightly erratically. After a Core was placed in the basement of the Storeroom, though, all electronic devices seem to always be at a full charge. Appliances light up and are available to turn on, fridges are cold, street lamps flicker with bright light. They don't need to be plugged into anything!
Internet / Network
There is an internal network. Mobile phones are widely available if your character wants to pick one up and text and use apps.
Animals/Bugs
There are bugs—moths, bees, butterflies, you name it. Not, like, an excess of bugs. But not an absence of them. There are, however, no animals.
Pets
Canon pets like familiars, etc, are reasonably allowed to come along with their person. If you're not sure if your circumstance toes some kind of worldbuilding line, just ask.
Accessibility
For the most part, you should be able to reach most places pretty easily (unless you're planning to scale cliffs, in which case, that would be challenging for pretty much everyone). The city itself doesn't rely on an excess of stairs, and if you're an oversized dragon, for example, the Cores seem to shrink you down so you can fit places nicely, if you'd like to.
Language
There seems to be a universal translation effect in place, so you can understand everyone magically. However, this might be the kind of thing that goes off sometimes if a Core malfunctions, or if the sky goes dark . . .
Welcome to Sidereal, the City of the Fixed Stars.
The city is vast, big enough to have held hundreds of thousands of people—once upon a time. It's empty now, except for you and the small group of equally confused intergalactic travellers that have found themselves here.
You'll likely want to begin to explore the city, but you can only go a short ways out of the Courtyard and into the accessible Zones (noted below) before finding yourself turned around and wandering back in near the fountain again, disoriented (and yes, this includes those that can fly or teleport). You'll have to start by puzzling out what you can find, see, and do within the city, and go from there.
If something can is listed in the Setting page, it's fair game to assume your character can find or encounter it. Players are encouraged to follow along with the World Posts and make the discovery of 'new' things—for example, figuring out where the storerooms are and what's in them, or reaching the top of the Clocktower and reporting back to others what you saw in the distance—into playable situations. Try [x has made their way to the Clock Tower and seems like they're about to go up] as a post instead of ["Hey guys so how about that stuff I found at the top of the Clock Tower?"]

Sky & Weather
The sky in Sidereal is a soft violet color, even on the brightest sunny days—never quite blue. The sunsets here are spectacular, with streaks of orange and peach and red. It very rarely rains—and when it does, there are usually thunderstorms, a heavy charge of static in the air.
When the sun sets, the stars come out, filled with bright, unfamiliar constellations that you've never seen before. It's a breathtaking view. Most of the time, you can easily see the two moons: one enormous and silver-blue, flooding the city with light almost as bright as day, when it's full. The second smaller moon is more golden, serene.
Atmosphere
It's never silent here. There's a constant melodic hum of the Cores, a background murmur throughout the city; the chirping of insects in the evening, particularly near the canalways; the burble of water from the canals and the waterfalls; and if you go up into the cliffs, you can feel the whipping wind and hear the roar of the endless sandstorm in the distance. The air smells mostly of grass and trees and flowers.
Art & Architecture
Sidereal is a city strung between art nouveau architecture and sleek modernity—all of which is falling into various states of disrepair, half-reclaimed by trees, vines, moss, and the decay of time. Many buildings, particularly close to the Courtyard, are made of stone, with fanciful carvings and bright stained-glass windows. Further out into the city, there are also hundreds of skyscrapers—some very utilitarian in nature, glass-walled and sleek and silver, others more fanciful and bright. The streets below your feet are a reddish cobblestone.
Lighting
There are classic street lamps lining the roads. At night, the stained-glass cages light up with a soft, colorful glow. If you break one apart (let's be real, someone will), you'll find a smooth white stone that's milky and cool to the touch. Similar white stones can be found embedded all over the city, even in your homes, and will dim or brighten if you press your hand to them.
Electricity
Now that there is a Core in the basement of the Storeroom, all electronic devices are able to charge themselves within the currently accessible areas. All appliances light up and are available to turn on, fridges are cold, street lamps flicker with bright light. All electronic devices will now work without needing to be plugged in, and there is a rudimentary network so you can use mobile devices.

The city is arranged in a circular fashion in twelve zones, with the fountain & Courtyard (Zone 0) directly in the center. Zone 12 is to the north, Zone 3 to the East, Zone 6 to the South, and Zone 9 to the West. (map)
Currently, characters only have access to the Zones listed in the setting details below. Although you can't get there yet, climbing to a high enough vantage point (if you can find one) will allow you to see that Sidereal is completely walled in by huge, reddish cliffs on all sides. Past the cliffs is an endless desert. Far, far in the distance, you can see a churning, never-ending wall of sand—a storm that seems to be devouring everything but here.

Past the cliffs is an endless desert. Far, far in the distance, you can see a churning, never-ending wall of sand—a storm that seems to be devouring everything but here.
